BeefUp Sustainability Welcomes Seven Experts as Advisors

Bench of diverse external voices will offer guidance on the initiative’s strategy to build a more resilient and sustainable beef supply chain.

One of the greatest challenges of our time is addressing the urgency of climate change. To feed a growing population while protecting the planet, we believe we can unlock the potential within our beef supply chain to build a better, more resilient world. Our answer to this challenge is BeefUp Sustainability, an industry-leading initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 within our North American beef supply chain.

The journey to reach our goal will require collaboration with and inputs from all viewpoints. We are excited to welcome our inaugural BeefUp Sustainability advisory panel. These seven founding members bring decades of experience across the food supply chain, the scientific community and beef industry.

“We need different voices around the table to find real-world solutions that deliver safe, sustainable protein to future generations,” says Jon Nash, leader of Cargill’s North American protein business. “Our goal with BeefUp Sustainability is to work collaboratively across the entire North American beef supply chain and build on the strong environmental stewardship led by farmers and ranchers.”

  • Dr. Lesley Mitchell, Forum for the Future
  • Lisa Sweet, World Economic Forum
  • Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State University

The panel will provide strategic insight, collaboratively helping to shape BeefUp Sustainability’s current efforts and actions in the areas of grazing management, feed production, innovation and food waste, while serving as a guide as we progress towards our goals. The panel will also make recommendations on additional cross-sector stakeholder engagement and information sharing to further momentum across the beef supply chain.

“In order to move our food system forward, we need to encourage a collaborative shift that helps address the complex challenge of climate change,” says Dr. Lesley Mitchell, associate director for sustainable nutrition, Forum for the Future. “Together, we have an opportunity to advance efforts that we all can get behind and meet our shared sustainability goals.”

“As a voice for cattle producers, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is excited to participate in this advisory panel to help build synergies and provide opportunities that help support rancher resilience,” adds Ashley McDonald, senior director of sustainability for NCBA.

The BeefUp Sustainability advisory panel builds on the success and value Cargill has seen in engaging with thought leaders in previous expert panels.
